Shyun —

Shyun is the stage name of Andy Khavand. He is a London-based producer and DJ working across drum and bass, drumstep and liquid funk. His recorded output includes contributions to Critical Music releases and projects from 2017 onward. Public biographical detail on Andy Khavand before 2017 is limited. He first appears in Critical Music’s catalogue in 2017, with tracks on Critical Presents: Systems 010 and the Unfold compilation that year. He followed those compilation appearances with The Beast EP in 2018 and the See It Our Way EP (a joint release with Nick Hunter, aka Cruk) in 2019. After those releases he and Nick Hunter formalised their collaboration under the name Fade Black and released the Condemned EP as Fade Black. He has also hosted programming for Critical Sound, the label’s show platform. Shyun’s work is repeatedly noted for technical production and sound design. Across his Critical Music tracks and EPs you’ll find tight break edits, precise transient shaping and layered bass design rather than one-note sub lines. He uses detailed automation and FX layering to carve space in the midrange while keeping sub frequencies controlled; that approach is audible across the Systems 010 contributions and The Beast EP. Where his liquid-leaning material appears, arrangements favour warm pads and filtered chord stabs sitting above crisp, edited amen-style break work and syncopated percussion. As a producer, Shyun’s contributions to the scene are concrete: catalogue tracks on Critical Music (Systems 010, Unfold), two solo EPs on the label (The Beast EP, 2018; See It Our Way EP with Cruk, 2019) and a collaborative project that became Fade Black, which released the Condemned EP. As a DJ and presenter he has hosted Critical Sound programming, bringing his productions and selections directly into the label’s broadcast and promotional channels. His known collaborative relationships include Nick Hunter (Cruk) — their See It Our Way EP (2019) predates the Fade Black project and the Condemned EP released under that name. Beyond those named releases and the Critical Music association, publicly available information about additional releases or personal influences is limited.
