Zombie Cats are a German–Australian drum & bass production duo. The project is composed of Rouven Fehr (Hannover, Germany) and Ross Deschamp (Perth, Australia). They formed in the summer of 2014 and produce within drum and bass, primarily working across neurofunk and techstep territory with clear liquid-funk and jungle influences.
Fehr and Deschamp operate between Hannover and Perth, collaborating across long distance to write and produce tracks. The pair’s public timeline begins in 2014; since then they have released EPs and albums, most notably the 2020 album Mutation. Their output has appeared on established bass and DnB labels including Eatbrain, Liquicity, Dispatch, Critical Music, Bad Taste and Viper.
Musically, Zombie Cats fuse a neuro/techstep backbone with liquid-funk melodic elements and jungle-derived break edits. Their productions characteristically pair tight, modulated low‑end patterns with sharply edited breakbeats: the bass work leans toward the modulated, growling patches associated with neurofunk while the percussion often uses chopped and re-sequenced jungle breaks for rhythmic momentum. Atmospheric pads, brief vocal fragments and glossy melodic layers bring the liquid-funk influence into several tracks and across the Mutation album.
On the production side, their tracks emphasize clear transient work on drums and focused low‑frequency control to keep the sub and mid‑bass defined in club systems. Arrangements tend to move between high‑impact drops and sections that open up for pads or sampled vocal lines, which is a recurring structural choice across their EPs and album material. Those choices underpin the crossover between the harder-edged neuro/techstep sound and the smoother, melodic approaches drawn from liquid funk.
Zombie Cats’ recorded contributions include singles and EPs placed on Eatbrain, Liquicity, Dispatch, Critical Music, Bad Taste and Viper, and the 2020 album Mutation stands as a document of their cross-genre approach. They have taken that recorded work to the live realm with festival appearances at Let It Roll and Fusion, representing their music on major European festival stages.
Public statements on direct artistic influences are limited; however, the duo’s catalogue explicitly references neurofunk and techstep production techniques alongside liquid-funk and jungle stylistic elements. Mutation (2020) remains the most concrete single release to consult for their combination of hard-edged bass design, edited breaks and melodic coloration.
