DnB Legend DJ Trace makes his first Boston appearance in over 20 years! As most already know, Trace was instrumental in building the foundations of Techstep and Neuro. His groundbreaking imprint DSCI4 continues to evolve that sonic palette and cultivate some of our fav producers, while he also runs the amazing 117 Recordings which harnesses a more old school jungle sound with modern production techniques. Come get a sneak preview of Trace & HLZ's "Raptor EP," which drops on Metalheadz this month!
DJ Trace was an early member of the crew of producers comprising the renowned No U-Turn imprint. Their appearance on the "Techsteppin'" comp released on Emotif in '95 helped seed a new direction in dnb, one characterized by heavy use of electronics, cavernous beats and basslines, and the dystopian histrionics that became the trademarks of the No U-Turn/Nu Black sound.
Trace's remixes of T.Power's "Mutant Jazz" - "The Mutant" and "Mutant Revisited" - further cemented him as a linchpin in techstep's most seminal attributes, with the latter becoming one of the most influential trial runs of the so-called "reece" bassline that would later become hugely popular within the genre. Mutant Revisited was also the first appearance of what became known as the "tramen."
Today, Trace runs DSCI4, a label that has pushed through producers like Black Sun Empire, SKC and Chris.SU as well as having legendary names like Bad Company, Kemal & Rob Data, Stakka & Skynet and Optical in its back catalogue. The label continues to put out some of the most innovative dark and weighty sounds. Trace's 117 Recordings focuses more on reviving old school jungle sounds and puts out some of the best in the genre.
