In these days of recycled edits, fake DJs and automated live sets, Derek Michael represents an

ethos and style that harkens back to electronic musics very beginnings.

Eschewing fame and fortune, Michael has quietly established himself as an electronic music

renaissance man: A skilled DJ who has held residencies around the globe; a producer who has

performed along side some of the world's biggest names in techno;

a promoter responsible for establishing Detroit and Los Angeles' legendary Friendly Integration

A/V party series; a record label impressario responsible in part for boutique IDM label, Detroit

Underground; a designer and inventor.

Michael possessed an entrepreneurial spirit from an early age. Hailing from Windsor, Ontario,

he founded the city's very first internet cafe which quickly became notorious as a place where

then rising techno luminaries such as Richie Hawtin and Thomas Brinkmann

would throw down on any given afternoon. At the same time Michael, then known as DM was

establishing himself as a DJ in the sprawling underground of Detroit's legendary late twentieth

century party scene. Never one to sit still however Michael soon took advantage of

a cultural exchange program offered by the Canadian government to become among the first

Canadian producers to relocate to Berlin, quickly earning a residency at the legendary Tresor

nightclub.

Michael's DJ career would take him across the globe with stops in Tokyo, Australia and even

a brief stint back in Windsor/Detroit before finally relocating to Los Angeles in 2005. Adapting

quickly to the city's scene he became a regular feature at Droid Behaviour parties before

bringing his A/V and art-intensive Friendly Integration events to the city of angels to much

acclaim. His uncompromising taste in music and deft skills on both the decks and the live have

won him a strong regional following and a dedicated overseas fan base.
