Must Make Music was founded by Workforce, the alias of Jack Stevens and formerly one half of SpectraSoul. Launched alongside his solo project, the label provides a platform for creative freedom, giving Stevens full control over release schedules, visual identity and sound. The ethos, carried forward from the Must Make podcast, is rooted in honesty, expression and a rejection of formulaic approaches.
What began as a personal outlet quickly grew into a community. The first external signing was Azifm, whose innovative productions set the tone for the imprint’s open-minded direction. Since then, Must Make Music has expanded through its Parchment compilations, welcoming talents including Winslow, Paige Julia, Break, En:vy and Thread. Each artist has been encouraged to explore without boundaries, reinforcing the label’s reputation for experimentation.
Based in Worthing and closely tied to Brighton’s underground culture, the label remains deliberately small and personal. Stevens oversees design himself to maintain a strong aesthetic thread. With a catalogue that balances his own work with bold new voices, Must Make Music continues to thrive as a vital hub for forward-thinking drum & bass.
