The Government House, formerly known as the Jyväskylä Civil Guard House or “Suoja,” is a building designed by Alvar Aalto and completed in 1929 for the use of the Civil Guard. Located on Kilpisenkatu, by Church Park (Kirkkopuisto), the building represents the final phase of Aalto’s classical period, while also showing early features of modernism. The building is protected and has been restored with great respect for its original spirit. The structure is brick-built and plastered, and its upper edge is adorned with a decorative light-blue fluted frieze that adds a sense of classical elegance. Although the building was long closed due to its poor condition, it has now been restored to its former glory. The Grand Hall of the Government House offers a magnificent setting for various cultural events such as concerts, performances by the Jyväskylä Symphony, and theater productions. This historic and elegant venue enriches the cultural life of Jyväskylä and provides unforgettable experiences.
