The musical legacy of The Angel not only lies in the last 30 years of rock and roll and sweaty punk gigs - its foundations have been shook by many a type of musical vibration for well over 150 years. Performances during the 19th century ranged from subdued choral meetings in the chapel to jaunty pianists tinkling away on the keys down in the Vaults bar. In the 1980s the upstairs function room named ‘The Chapel’ was converted into a notorious Nottingham rock n’ roll haunt, hosting the likes of then up and coming acts such as Oasis, Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys. The venue has always been cited as a go to Nottingham venue for young up and coming musicians who were looking to showcase their sound, build a following and gain recognition and refine their craft to a local crowd. The Channel 4 programme Rock School – also featured The Old Angel in its second series with Gene Simmons visiting to watch them perform in the Chapel. In 2016 after the announcement of its closure, fears of losing this iconic Nottingham venue where stomped out with the news that The Old Angel Inn, was due to be taken over by Ben Rose, owner of the successful vegetarian and vegan Alley Café Bar in the city centre. After a much-needed refurbishment the venue opened up its doors once again, with a modern more appealing interior that reached out to a broader audience. The iconic Inn now have its own microbrewery, a mixture of a traditional style gastro food with an open kitchen and continues to feature live music hosting local bands during music nights.
