Dan Guidance

Dan Guidance is the stage name of Dan Guy. He is a producer and DJ based in Bristol, United Kingdom. His work sits across chillstep, drum and bass, jungle and the liquid funk end of DnB. He has released music since 2011, beginning with the Introspection EP (released 7 October 2011).

Dan Guy entered the scene as a producer focused on atmospheric and melodic DnB and chillstep textures. Public release activity begins in 2011 with Introspection; since then he has released multiple EPs and albums and put music out on labels including Technique, Fokuz and Soul Deep. In 2024 he issued the LP Freedom Of Movement on Portal Recordings.

Musically, Guidance’s productions emphasise space and melodic motion. Tracks commonly layer reverb-rich pads and keyed motifs over clear low-end; percussion sits crisp and tight rather than overly saturated. His arrangements favour extended intros and breakdowns where atmosphere carries the track forward before the drums return — a characteristic that ties his work to liquid funk and chillstep sensibilities.

On production technique, Guidance frequently balances warm analogue-sounding pads with digitally processed percussion. You’ll hear swelling ambient beds, stereo width added through chorus and delay, and sidechain-style ducking to make the sub-bass and kick sit cleanly in the mix. Drum programming leans toward chopped, rolling breaks rather than aggressive neuro-style edits; snares and claps are often given short plate reverb and transient shaping to keep hits tight across systems. Vocal elements appear on collaborative tracks and are treated as textural or lead hooks, with time-stretching, subtle gating and echo used to integrate them into the mix.

His role in the scene includes studio production, release activity and DJ mixes. Aside from releases on Technique, Fokuz and Soul Deep, Guidance has contributed DJ mixes and appeared in interview formats such as the Different Drumz Podcast. He has also worked with vocalists and other producers on collaborative tracks (credits cited in his public discography and release notes), using guest vocals to broaden melodic focus on several releases.

Specific named releases to anchor his catalogue are the 2011 Introspection EP (7 October 2011) as his first public release and the 2024 LP Freedom Of Movement on Portal Recordings. Publicly available interviews and mixes document his work as both a studio producer and a selector, but detailed lists of every collaborator or every EP are limited in public sources.

Freedom Of Movement (Portal Recordings, 2024) is his most recent full-length release and the latest concrete reference point for his evolving sound.
