Lens (Ellen Lewin) is a Brighton-based producer and DJ working across drum and bass and jungle, with regular output and sets that draw on bass house, bassline, house and liquid funk. She came to wider attention from around 2018 and is active on Hospital Records-related platforms.
Lewin emerged on the Brighton scene around 2018. She held local residencies in Brighton, including a regular slot at Volks. Behind the scenes she interned with Hospital Records/Clinic Talent and later joined their team. In 2019 she became co-host of Hospital Records' Rinse FM show, a role that placed her on the label’s broadcast platform while she built a performance profile across UK and European drum & bass bills.
Lens started releasing original productions in 2022. Her recorded output that year includes the Spearhead EP "Marufo" and the single "Love The Way" with Lally. She has also worked alongside and been credited with other scene producers: collaborations and credits include work with Whiney, Pola & Bryson and Unglued (Lens is credited on "Crunchy Nutter", 2024). She regularly appears on Hospital Records lineups and European D&B bills as both a live performer and label-affiliated host.
As a producer, Lens’s tracks sit at the intersection of liquid funk warmth and bassline/bass house weight. In production she favours layered low end — a clear sub layer under bitey midrange growls — and compact, edited breaks rather than long, untouched loop takes. Her arrangements typically use chopped break edits and swung percussion to create motion, with pitched vocal fragments or short melodic stabs used as recurring motifs. You’ll hear soft, reverb-drenched pads or atmosphere to give tracks a liquid sheen, while bass design leans on tight saturation and multiband processing to keep sub clarity on club systems.
Technically, Lens’s workflow emphasizes break editing and transient control: tight snare/transient shaping to keep the drums punchy, sidechain compression between kick and bass for space in the low end, and selective re-sampling of drums to create unique texture. Her mixes balance sub weight with midrange definition so snares and hats cut through bass-heavy arrangements, a practical approach for translating tracks from studio to systems at Hospital shows and European dancefloors.
On the performance side, Lens has combined DJ sets with radio hosting responsibilities. Her Rinse FM co-host role for Hospital Records from 2019 gave her regular airtime to showcase label releases, guest mixes and new productions. Her Brighton residencies (including Volks) and appearances across Hospital bills have made those live slots a place to road-test edits and collaborations with artists like Whiney, Pola & Bryson and Unglued.
Public statements about specific formative influences are limited. Her music’s touchpoints are audible: the melodic clarity of liquid funk, the rhythmic shuffle of jungle-influenced breakwork, and the club-orientated low-end focus of bassline and bass house all inform her sound, and those elements appear across her releases from 2022 onward.
Lens’s recorded work (Spearhead EP "Marufo", "Love The Way" with Lally) and credits (including Unglued’s "Crunchy Nutter", 2024) sit alongside her Hospital Records/Clinic Talent affiliation and Rinse FM co-hosting as concrete markers of her role in the current drum & bass and jungle circuit.
