M-zine

M-zine (born Joeri Deyaert) is a Belgian producer and DJ working in drum & bass and jungle. He is based in Vilvoorde, just north of Brussels. He began releasing music in 2011 and has issued tracks and EPs on labels including Proximity Recordings, Demand Records, Dispatch Recordings, 31 Recordings, Warm Communications, Commercial Suicide, Critical Recordings, Sofa Sound (Bristol) and Subtitles Music.

Background: Joeri started putting music out in 2011 and cut early records in collaboration with fellow Belgian producer Scepticz. Those joint releases appeared on labels that attracted attention across the European DnB circuit. After the collaborative phase he moved into solo work while continuing to release on international imprints; his album Know When You're Ready was released on Sofa Sound.

Musical style: M-zine’s productions draw explicitly on techno, hip‑hop, soul and funk. That lineage appears in his tracks as rhythmic emphasis and groove-first arrangement — drum parts that favour tight editing and pocketed swing, basslines that prioritize a solid low end, and layered atmospherics that sit above the drums rather than clutter them. His records often balance sampled or groove-based elements (from soul and funk) with electronic sound design and repetitive, techno-derived pulse, producing tracks that work both in headphones and on club systems.

Production techniques and signature elements: While specific studio workflows are not widely published, M-zine’s catalogue shows a focus on clean break editing, careful low-frequency control and textural layering. His releases commonly present focused sub-bass, concise midrange drum hits and ambient pads or FX to create space around the rhythm. Those choices underline the techno and hip‑hop influences named in interviews and credits.

Career and contributions: Beyond the Scepticz collaborations, M-zine has maintained a steady presence on labels that span the deeper, more technical and the club-ready edges of drum & bass. The Sofa Sound album Know When You're Ready is a key solo statement in his discography. His tracks have been played on radio shows and he has performed at events across the international drum & bass scene, representing the Belgian DnB output on both releases and live line-ups.

Influences and connections: The artist cites techno, hip‑hop, soul and funk as direct influences and has a documented working relationship with Scepticz on earlier releases; those ties, together with his label list, map his connections into the European drum & bass network. Public information on other personal collaborations and detailed studio methods is limited.
