Marcus Visionary

Marcus Visionary is the stage name of Marcus Sills. He is a Toronto-based producer, DJ and label owner active since the early 1990s. Within drum and bass/jungle he works across jungle and drum-and-bass styles and also operates between related bass-driven genres listed in his catalog: ragga, bassline, breakbeat, UK garage, UK funky, grime, footwork and funky house.

Marcus began DJing as a teenager. By 1992 he was involved in Delirium rave productions in Toronto. In 1995 he adopted the Marcus Visionary name alongside collaborator Dave Whalen (aka Nemesis). He has performed internationally while remaining based in Toronto.

As a producer and label owner Marcus has released music on Liondub International and on his own imprints: Inner City Dance, Stereo One and Tribal Life. His 2011 album Humble was released on Liondub and featured Jamaican vocalists such as Johnny Osbourne and Sugar Minott, explicitly linking his production work to reggae/dancehall vocal traditions.

Musically, Marcus Visionary’s output sits at the intersection of jungle/dnb and Caribbean vocal styles. The concrete example is Humble (2011), where he places Jamaican vocalists over programmed drum-and-bass frameworks. He also works across breakbeat and bassline textures and has released material through his three imprints, which show a range that includes garage and funky house influences alongside jungle and ragga-leaning tracks.

On the DJ side, Marcus presents and curates sets that reflect those cross-genre connections. He has hosted the long-running Toronto jungle/drum-and-bass radio show The Prophecy for many years, using that platform to play and premiere releases tied to his labels and collaborators. The Prophecy is a specific, sustained outlet through which he has presented jungle and drum-and-bass material to a local and international audience.
