Random Movement

Random Movement is the stage name of Michael Richards, a DJ and producer from Winter Haven, Florida, working in drum and bass, jungle and liquid funk. The project began in 2003 and transitioned to Richards as a solo act in 2006. Random Movement has released on Innerground Records, Fokuz Recordings, V Recordings and his own Flight Pattern imprint.

Random Movement started in 2003 as a duo with Jack Sheets (known as Mister Shifter). Sheets left the project in 2006 and Michael Richards continued Random Movement as a solo artist. Richards runs the Flight Pattern label, hosts a weekly show on Bassdrive and produces a monthly podcast. He has performed internationally.

Musically, Random Movement is most often described as a soulful, liquid drum & bass producer and DJ. His productions center on warm sub-bass, melodic chord work and clear, mid-forward drum programming. Tracks typically pair lush pads and Rhodes-style keys or vocal chops with tight, edited breaks rather than heavily distorted amen rewrites. The percussion is mixed with emphasis on transient clarity and controlled low-end, while atmospheric layers and sampled soul/jazz elements carry the melodic content.

As a producer, Richards favors precise drum editing, linear low-frequency design and arrangements that leave space for melodic detail and vocals. His sound design commonly uses pads and electric-piano tones to create harmonic movement, while the basslines sit deep and round with limited overdrive so the kick and sub remain distinct. As a DJ, Random Movement’s sets focus on harmonic selection and flow: long phrasing, smooth transitions and a bias toward liquid rollers and vocalist-led tracks to maintain a consistent mood across a dancefloor or radio set.

Career highlights include releases across respected labels — Innerground, Fokuz and V Recordings — alongside his self-releases on Flight Pattern. Running Flight Pattern has allowed Richards to issue his own material and curate releases that match his aesthetic. His weekly Bassdrive show and monthly podcast extend that curation, delivering new and classic liquid and soulful DnB to an international listenership.

Public sources do not list a definitive roster of individual artist influences for Richards, but his label and release history, plus the melodic, jazz- and soul-inflected production techniques in his catalog, position Random Movement clearly within the liquid/soulful strand of drum and bass.
