Andrew Ndegwa Davies, known professionally as Degs, is a Brighton-based producer, DJ, vocalist and MC working in drum & bass, jungle and liquid drum & bass (liquid funk). He is British of Kenyan (Kikuyu) heritage and plays piano and guitar as part of his songwriting and production toolkit.
Degs signed to Hospital Records in 2018. That year he released the single "Poveglia," which brought him wider attention. His debut album, Letters From Ndegwa, was released on 27 March 2020 on Hospital Records. Alongside studio work he performs DJ sets and deploys his voice and MC skills in live contexts.
His sound foregrounds sung melodies and R&B/hip‑hop phrasing layered over liquid-leaning drum & bass and jungle rhythms. As a songwriter and instrumentalist he often builds tracks from piano and guitar parts; those acoustic and chordal elements sit under his vocal takes and shape the harmonic centre of many productions. Production-wise, Degs places clear emphasis on vocal production—close-miked lead takes, doubled harmonies and tasteful delay/reverb—set against warm, melodic sub-bass lines rather than abrasive bass distortion. Drum programming leans to rolling, syncopated patterns drawn from liquid DnB and jungle; percussion is arranged to leave space for vocal phrasing rather than to bury it in the mix.
On record and in sets Degs bridges club-facing drum & bass rhythms with song-minded structures. "Poveglia" (2018) signalled that approach: vocal-led composition with dancefloor-ready tempo and a glossy, melodic low end. Letters From Ndegwa (2020) collects those tendencies into a full-length sequence of vocal songs, instrument-led arrangements and electronic production—each track building on his roles as singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and producer.
Degs cites R&B and hip‑hop influences in his vocal delivery and songwriting; those genres inform his cadence, harmony choices and use of contemporary vocal production techniques. He remains based in Brighton and continues to produce, DJ and perform material that blends his instrumental skills with liquid and jungle rhythmic frameworks.
