We are more than gassed to be welcoming London-based DJ & producer, Benny L, back up to Scotland for the first time in a few years! Having carved his own unique sound, Benny L is definitely one to turn heads with his hard hitting basslines and distinct amen's this night is set to go off in the intimate space of The Mash House.
Benny L artist bio:
Growing up, music was the center point of Benny’s life. After learning a range of instruments, including drums, the piano, trumpet, and even the violin, he dedicated some of his most formative years to perfecting his craft. Although this could only be expected, as he grew up alongside family members who also devoted just as much time to honing their own musicality. But it was his older brother who eventually led him to an interest in DJing. Benny spent hours watching him mix in his bedroom, spinning everything from Jungle to
Garage. Benny also began to seek out pirate radio stations in his local area, helping him develop his own
musical tastes, which only grew as he got older. His brother would regularly head down to Swag Records
and Big Apple Records in Croydon, with Benny waiting patiently for his return to hear about his weekly
exploits. And when Benny eventually started purchasing his own music, he laid his hands on the Drum & Bass Arena ‘The Classics’ Compilation, mixed by Goldie in 2005, as well as Dillinja’s Cybotron album,
which blew his ears away upon first listen.
Once his teenage years hit, he attended his first drum & bass night at Ministry of Sound on a Thursday in 2011. It was here that Benny was introduced to some of the genre’s finest contemporary selections. He witnessed head honchos Andy C and London Elektricity throw down their records, but it wasn’t until he saw the legendary Dillinja at London’s Cable nightclub that he decided to follow a similar path.
At the age of fifteen/sixteen, he finally got hold of his brother’s turntables and sifted through boxes of vinyl,
diligently mixing until he began playing out in the living rooms of friends’ parties. He then attended a Performing Arts Academy in Bristol, where he worked for a year on a production and DJ course, learning
the trade as well as all that goes into the industry. The first drum & bass tune Benny ever feasted on was
Dillinja’s ‘Nasty Ways,’ which instantly captivated him with its hard-hitting sounds. He was enthralled by
Dillinja’s style, and he was instantly gripped by the entirety of his back catalogue. DJ Hazard also had a
resounding influence on Benny’s path to notoriety after seeing him play at Motion in 2012, Then watching
the infamous DJ Randall taught him exactly how a DJ should handle the decks. Dropping tracks at the right
time and not being afraid to hold back and roll the mix out was something he adopted from the heavyweight.
After being discovered by Audioporn Records head honcho and pivotal drum & bass player Shimon, his
first track, ‘Speakers Vibrate,’ landed in Shimon’s inbox. The ‘Granulate’ EP followed suit, as well as the
definitive ‘Thunder,’ which firmly put him on the map via Audioporn. And since releasing ‘Low Blow’ and
‘Vanta Black’ on the historic imprint Metalheadz, Benny made history when his remix of ‘John Holt -
Police In Helicopter’ became the first DnB track to score a Beatport number 1 across all genres, making him a much sought-after remixer. Fast forward to 2021, after the successful release of the 'Reactions' album and a tour of New Zealand and Australia, Benny was now focusing on setting up his own imprint, TrES-2b Music with Shimon & Trimer. Launched with ‘Alchemy’ featuring the very talented vocalist Shady Novelle, it was the perfect opener for the newly founded label. This then kicked off a succession of collaborations and releases with the likes of Bladerunner, Jappa & Ragga Twins, Trimer, Sweetpea, and Limited. The label was well on its way on the new journey, with consistent releases from Heist & Pleasure and also new talent such as LeStR and El. TrES-2b had firmly landed on the radar of Drum & Bass labels. Now, with Benny’s highly anticipated tracks 'Replicant' and 'Shadow People' that reminisce the impact Vanta Black had on the scene, and a packed DJ schedule hitting up some of the biggest clubs and festivals across the world, he has proved that the pages are still turning fast for Benny L.
