Koven is an English electronic music duo from London. The project was formed by producer Max Rowat in 2011. Vocalist and DJ Katie Anne Boyle joined Koven in 2014. Within drum and bass/jungle contexts they are best known for drum and bass and dubstep releases.
Rowat began Koven as a studio project in 2011; Boyle joined three years later and brought a front-facing vocal role and DJing to the act. The pair have released music on labels including Viper Recordings and Monstercat. Their debut album, Butterfly Effect, was issued on 13 March 2020 and later appeared in a deluxe edition. Butterfly Effect was nominated for Best Album at the 2020 Drum & Bass Arena awards.
As performers Koven split duties: Max Rowat is the project’s primary producer and studio engineer; Katie Anne Boyle provides lead vocals and performs Koven live sets and DJ slots. Since 2018 Katie has handled Koven’s live performances and DJ appearances while Max continues to drive production in the studio.
Musically Koven’s drum and bass work is vocal-led and production-forward. Tracks pair Katie’s melodic lead lines and layered harmonies with Max’s synth and bass programming. Their drums typically sit at standard DnB tempos with tight, edited breaks and emphasis on clear transient attack. The low end is drawn toward punchy sub-bass and mid-bass weight rather than muddied low mids; higher frequencies are kept open with crisp hi-hats, rides and processed vocal chops. In dubstep-leaning material they use half-time rhythmic treatments, detuned bass stacks and heavy LFO movement on low frequencies while preserving vocal clarity. Atmospherics in their arrangements often come from sustained pad layers, reverbed vocal doubles and brief orchestral stabs, creating cinematic peaks around vocal hooks.
Production techniques evident across their releases include vocal-centric arrangement (verse/chorus structures built around Katie’s performances), layered vocal processing (doubles, pitch-risers, filtered delays) and focused mix decisions that prioritize the vocal and the low-end simultaneously. Their sound design blends polished pop songwriting elements with bass music translation — melodic hooks sit on top of club-ready low end and processed percussive detail. Where appropriate, they use half-time dubstep textures and full-tempo DnB rollers within the same record sequencing.
Career highlights that can be verified from public records are the label releases on Viper Recordings and Monstercat, the 13 March 2020 release of Butterfly Effect (with a subsequent deluxe edition), and the album’s nomination for Best Album at the 2020 Drum & Bass Arena awards. From 2018 onward Katie Boyle has been the face of Koven’s live and DJ output while Max Rowat continues to produce under the Koven name.
Public, attributable statements about Koven’s direct influences or a detailed list of collaborations are limited in available sources; the verifiable record centers on the duo’s formation (Max Rowat, 2011), Katie Anne Boyle’s joining in 2014, label releases on Viper and Monstercat, the Butterfly Effect album release on 13 March 2020 (and its deluxe edition), the 2020 Drum & Bass Arena Best Album nomination, and the 2018 shift to Katie handling live and DJ performance with Max focusing on production.
