Mampi Swift

Mampi Swift is a London-based DJ and producer working across drum and bass and jungle, with strong ties to liquid funk, breakbeat and adjacent styles (including breakcore, bhangra, hardcore punk and screamo as part of his broader palette).

He began DJing in 1990 and moved into production while working at Lucky Spin records. Across the 1990s he released on established labels including Suburban Base, True Playaz, Trouble On Vinyl and Frontline. In 1997 he launched his own imprint, Charge Recordings, and issued a string of notable tracks under his name, among them "The One", "Hi Tek", "Touch Of J", "Jaws" and "Trippin".

Mampi Swift’s DJing is historically notable for the double-drop technique: lining up two records so their bass and break hits fall at the same moment. He is regularly credited as a pioneer of that double-drop style alongside Andy C — a specific mixing approach that relies on tight cueing, precise pitch control and phrase-matching to make two records land together. As a DJ he favours quick, rhythm-focused mixes where the impact of simultaneous drops is used as a structural device rather than an occasional trick.

On the production side, his output from the 1990s onwards sits within break-driven drum and bass frameworks common to the labels he released on. His records show emphasis on edited breakbeats and pronounced low-end weight suitable for club systems, and his catalog has been presented in formats DJs use for mixing and double-drops. Across releases on Charge Recordings and the other labels named above, his tracks and remixes secured play from DJs and airtime on radio, which helped them circulate in the international DJ circuit.

Mampi Swift has toured internationally, carrying both his DJ sets and his productions to clubs and radio shows outside the UK. Publicly available information about his specific personal influences is limited beyond his documented association with the double-drop practice and his contemporaneous position in the 1990s UK scene, but his recorded output, label history and role at Lucky Spin mark him as an active producer–DJ with a footprint on the era’s dancefloor and airplay. Charge Recordings, launched in 1997, remains the concrete marker of that period of his career.
